Gage Wentzel of Montoursville knew that he was going to be in for a battle on Saturday evening at Williamsport’s Magic Dome for the District 4 Class AA wrestling championships.
The No. 4th-ranked wrestler in the state stood across the mat from Warrior Run’s Max Wirnsberger, who happens to be the No. 5th-ranked wrestler in Pennsylvania.
A battle of top two-5 wrestlers squaring off for a district crown? What more could fans inside the Magic Dome have asked for.
Wentzel battled tough and was able to edge Wirnsberger by decision, to win gold at 172 pounds on Saturday. He was one of six Warriors to reach the finals and one of two to take gold for Montoursville as the Warriors won the team title with 189 points. Warrior Run finished second with 128 points and Line Mountain took third (124.5).
“It’s definitely something you want to do, sort of set a statement,” Wentzel said of winning gold at districts. “It doesn’t end here though, regionals is another goal and another milestone. Just go back to the room and doing the small things right.”

Wentzel and Wirnsberger were scoreless through the first period. In the second after 54 seconds of battling, Wentzel secured a point with an escape and, with nine seconds to go in the second period, scored a takedown on Wirnsberger for a 4-0 lead heading into the third period.
“He’s got heavy hands and you definitely have to watch out for them, he snaps. That really sums it up for me.”
The Warrior secured his final point with less than a minute remaining for the 5-0 lead and held on late to prevent Wirnsberger from countering and trying to rally
While Wentzel was familiar with Wirnsberger and knew he was ranked in the top 5 in the state as well, Wentzel approached the match the same as he would against an unranked wrestler and didn’t change his approach.
“It’s nothing that we’re not prepared for. It’s just another match in my eyes, you do everything the same way whether the kids ranked or not,” Wentzel said. “You just go out there and have fun.”

The run through districts improved Wentzel to 44-5 this year. He posted back-to-back tech falls to begin the tournament with a 17-0, 2:30 quarterfinal win over Kohen Shingara of Line Mountain, ranked No. 20, before tech falling Lewisburgs Chase Wenrich, ranked No. 15, 21-4, 2:42 in the semifinals.
The area saw an impressive 44 wrestlers qualify for next week’s Northeast Regional Class AA tournament at Williamsport.
Earning gold medals were Williamson’s Zander Wilson (107), North Penn-Liberty’s Bryce Pequignot (114), Montoursville’s David Kennedy (127), Montgomery’s Brandt Harer (139), Warrior Run’s Reagan Milheim (160), Wentzel (172),Warrior Run’s Tyler Ulrich (189) and Muncy’s Austin Johnson (215).
Both Harer and Johnson are ranked No. 1 at their weights.
Montoursville’s Teli Bobotas (121), Montoursville’s Blaize Vogel (133), Montoursville’s Hayden Harvey (160), Warrior Run’s Wirnsberger (172), Montgomery’s Coy Bryson (189) and Montoursville’s Landon Morehart (285) all finished with silver medals.

The top seven finishers at each weight class advanced to regionals.
Harer dominated just like he has all season. The Red Raider is undefeated at 139 this year, and improved to 50-0 as he reached his 150th career victory with his convincing 21-6, 1:24 tech fall win over Midd-West’s Charley Paige in the final. Paige is ranked No. 17 in the state.
“It’s a great mark. I’m trying to be the best person I can and that’s reflecting on the mat,” Harer said. “150 is great, but I’m going to keep pushing for more.”
Milheim of Warrior Run entered Saturday’s 160 final in a showdown of two top-15 ranked wrestlers with the Defender being No. 2 in the state and Montoursville’s Harvey ranked No. 12. Milheim kept accumulating points and, like Harer, secured a dominating tech fall win over Harvey, 24-9, 5:51.
“It was pushing my pace and just working my attacks and my feet to get him moving,” Milheim said as to what the key was for winning. “His whole goal was to try to slow me down and keep the match close.”

That’s easier said than done against Milheim. Instead, Milheim built up a big lead early and was able to roll through the three periods.
Wilson etched his name in Williamson history by being the school’s first District 4 champion since 2019 when he defeated Southern Columbia’s Rowen Humphrey by decision, 7-0, at 107.
At 189, Ulrich had a great match against Coy Bryson of Montgomery. The two both wrestled well with Ulrich edging the Red Raider, 4-1, for district gold.
Taking bronze from the area were Montoursville’s Branden Eisenhour (107), Montgomery’s Liam Seeley (114), Hughesville’s Chase Shaner (133), Montoursville’s Owen Kleinman (189) and Williamson’s Luke Sottolano (285). Montgomery’s Manny Stoltzfus (107), Canton’s Lyle Vermilya (114), North Penn-Liberty’s Brayden Pequignot (127), Canton’s Carson Rockwell (145), Hughesville’s Keagan Smith (152), Hughesville’s Mason Mordan (160), Lewisburg’s Chase Wenrich (172) and Wellsboro’s Ryder Bowen (189) were all fourth-place finishers.
Eisenhour and Montgomery standout Stoltzfus faced off for for the second time in as many weeks, this time with a bronze medal on the line. Eisenhour came out victorious yet again, winning by decision 7-1.

Seventh-place finishers were North Penn-Liberty’s Bodhi Nickerson (107), Sullivan County’s Andrew Kapec (114), Williamson’s Hunter Simonds (121), Canton’s Tommy Preston (139), North Penn-Liberty’s Riley Oakes (152), Hughesville’s Wyatt Gavitt (172) and Hughesville’s Luke Stutzman (215).
