Penn College men continue Cinderalla run, advance to United East semifinals
LA PLUME — Penn College men’s basketball continued its Cinderella run through the United East playoffs as the 12th-seeded Wildcats defeated the fourth-seeded Giants, 77-71, on Saturday afternoon. The Wildcats improved to 10-17 and heads to #1 Bryn Athyn for the semifinal round Tuesday. Keystone finished its 2024-25 season with a 13-11 record.
Bryn Athyn won 73-63 against Wilson College in other quarterfinal action on Saturday.
Down 30-31 with two minutes left in the first half, Donnie Bass Briscoe floated in a layup and a 32-31 lead. The next possession, Livingston Cross poked away a steal and assisted a Gavin Barrett layup and take a 36-32 advantage to the break as the Wildcats would not surrender the lead in the second half. Bass Briscoe hit another layup on the Wildcats’ first possession of the second half and Michael Woolridge connected on both free throw attempts to lead 40-34.
After the Giants pulled within one, 45-44 with 14 minutes on the clock, Cross knocked down a pair of free throw attempts to spark an 11-6 run including six points from Barrett and stretch the Penn College lead to 57-50. Ronn Flood, Jr., gave the Wilcats its largest lead of the second half, 61-52 with a layup at the 6:55 mark. Keystone needed to foul as the time wound down, but the Wildcats went 11-for-12 at the line to close out the game and earn its second upset victory of the playoffs.
Cross added another double-double to his resume with 22 points and 15 rebounds while Barrett scored a team-high 24 points and grabbed nine boards. Bass Briscoe and Ronn Flood Jr., both aided in the scoring with 10 points each in the victory.
Penn College, which shot 42% (26-61), including seven made 3s and 78% (18-23) at the line, contained Keystone to 38% (25-66) shooting and just one double-digit scorer as Daryl Coleman scored 28 points.
