The Montoursville Area School Board at its recent meeting took a step toward improving security in schools with its approval of a grant-funded $55,440 agreement with ZeroEyes to detect potential shootings.
“They notify us of something taking place in school,” district Superintendent Dan Taormina said. “It’s different than any other product out there.”
ZeroEyes is described as software using artificial intelligence to detect firearms in security camera video feeds with the ability to alert authorities immediately.
Taormina told the board the system will cover all the district’s school buildings.
“It’s a manned center,” he said.
The board acted on various personnel matters.
The resignations of Sean Walker, head girls’ basketball coach, and Emily Vanderlin, health care aide, were approved.
Taormina noted that athletic coaches for different sports will now be approved for the next season soon after the prior season ends.
“I just think it will provide clarity and transparency,” he said.
Coaches are hired on a yearly basis.
The board approved the following to the substitute list: Theresa Sander, Harley Lentz, and Anna McKeta.
The board approved an agreement with Lycoming College for its Early Warrior Dual Enrollment program.
The program recruits high school students to the college student body and makes undergraduate courses available to them.
The board approved an agreement with the Williamsport Country Club for the high school golf team to use course and practice facilities during the fall season at a cost of $3,000.
The next school board meeting will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 25, at the high school.
