Kendall Wagner one of three CM wrestlers to take silver in girls wrestling at districts

After trailing in the first period 3-0, Central Mountain standout Kendall Wagner was pinned in the closing seconds by Punxsutawney’s Jael Miller to finish as a silver medalist at 170 pounds.

Wagner was one of three Central Mountain wrestlers to earn a silver medal on Friday at the District 5-6-9 girls wrestling championships.

Wagner had a first-round bye before she earned a 7-2 decision against Southern Huntingdon’s Chloe Holloway. Wagner scored three points with 42 seconds left in the first period for a 3-0 lead.

Neither had any points in the second period, but Wagner took control in the third.

After 60 seconds, Wagner scored three more points for a 6-0 lead. Holloway cut the deficit to 6-2 with 35 seconds left, but Wagner held on the rest of the bout for another point and secured the win to advance to the final.

Wagner is 22-6 this year after suffering the loss in the finals at districts. She has 18 wins by fall and has been pinned just five times. Wagner took second at districts last year as well and was a second-place finisher at regionals.

Central Mountain standout Ashlynn Miller, the No. 2 seed in the 235-pound bracket (20-5) faced Bedford’s Mylah Steinbuch (16-1) in the final in a matchup of 1-2 seeds.

Miller and Steinbuch didn’t allow any offense in the first period as they took a scoreless dual into the second.

Steinbuch secured a point less than 20 seconds into the second period for a narrow 1-0 lead before a takedown with 1:27 left gave her a 4-0 lead over Miller. The Wildcat would end up being pinned in that second period, however, to end the tournament with a silver medal.

Central Mountain’s Austynn Falls finished with a silver medal when she was pinned in 40 seconds to Greater Johnstown’s Sayona Harris-Haye at 142.

Evelth earned a 14-2 major decision win in the championship semifinals against Glendale’s Elizaeth Kaufman. Tice secured a first-period fall in 1:24 over State College’s Anna Lackey to advance to the first-place medal round as well.
