A man and woman were left homeless late Wednesday morning when a fire broke out in the basement of their residence, shown here, at 307 Grove St. in Avis. Smoke was pouring from the house when firefighters arrived on the scene, Avis Assistant Chief David Closs said. No one was home at the time. Firemen donned self-contained breathing apparatus, entered the house with hoses and had most of the fire contained in about 20 minutes, Closs said, adding that there were no reports of injuries. A state police fire marshal is leading the investigation into the cause of the fire, Cross said. Assisting Avis were firefighters from Jersey Shore, Lock Haven, Dunnstown, Woolrich and Antes Fort.
