Pa. Turnpike Commission says beware of toll scam texts

The Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission is warning residents of a new version of a “smishing scam” by reminding people not to open links or replying to texts asking for tolls to be paid, the commission said in a news release.

Scammers have been sending texts to people across the US demanding that tolls be paid.

Texts have been impersonating toll agencies since about April of 2024. These texts have included one impersonating the collection agency works on behalf of the PA Turnpike the news release added.

People receiving an unsolicited text or email can file a complaint with the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center at www.ic3.gov according to the PA Turnpike’s official website.

E-ZPass account holders can check on their account by calling 1-877-736-6727 (M-F, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.) or use the official PA Turnpike E-ZPass website.
