Man killed in Route 220 crash near Jersey Shore after colliding with wrong-way driver

JERSEY SHORE – A motorist from Illinois was killed Monday night when his Subaru Forester and a Mercedes – whose driver was traveling south in the northbound lanes – collided on Route 220, just west of Nichols Run Road, in Porter Township, Lycoming County Coroner Charles E. Kiessling Jr. confirmed Tuesday morning.
Killed in the crash was Michael Kurelja, 38, Kiessling said. There was no more definitive address for him. An autopsy was scheduled for Wednesday.
Following the impact, the Mercedes clipped a northbound trailer being pulled by a truck before overturning and catching fire, Lycoming Regional Police said.
The Lock Haven area woman driving the Mercedes managed to climb out of the burning car and run across the southbound lanes, where she was hit by at least one car, possibly two, police said.
The woman, whose identity has not yet been released, was taken to a regional medical center and was recovering from her injuries, Lycoming Regional Police Chief Christopher Kriner said.
“She was struck by the side view mirror of one vehicle and may have been hit by another, but that can’t be confirmed. A witness reported seeing up in the air,” Sgt. Brian Fioretti, who was at the scene, said.
The crash occurred just before 7 p.m. and shut down the northbound lanes of Route 220 for about five hours, according to a spokeswoman with the state Department of Transportation.
“It was quite a mess,” one emergency responder said in describing the scene.
Lycoming Regional and Pine Creek police officers used portable extinguishers in an attempt to put out the fire. “We thought initially that the driver was still in the car” Fioretti said.
Jersey Shore firefighters responded and put out the fire. Fire police detoured traffic off the highway.
State police accident reconstructionists assisted at crash scene.
