Book about fracking in Williamsport to be discussed at club
The Middle Susquehanna Riverkeeper Association’s next Nature Book Club meeting is scheduled for Monday, Sept. 26, at 7 p.m. at the organization’s office at 112 Market St. in Sunbury.
The book featured is “Up to Heaven and Down to Hell” by Colin Jerolmack. The New York University sociology professor spent nine months living in Williamsport and interviewing people potentially affected by nearby fracking.
It included many who were approached to sell the mineral rights under their land. What he found about community action surprised him, but can be explained as consistent. Ann Fisher will lead the discussion at the MSRKA office.
The book club will be joined via Zoom by Jerolmack, for the discussion. Last year, he talked about the book in an episode of the Middle Susquehanna Riverkeeper podcast. That podcast can be heard on the Middle Susquehanna Riverkeeper Association’s website.
The Middle Susquehanna Riverkeeper Association serves an 11,000-square-mile watershed of the Susquehanna River, including Sullivan, Lycoming, Clinton, Union and Northumberland counties. Read more at www.middlesusquehannariverkeeper.org.
