Open Stage of Harrisburg to present ‘Amelie the Musical’ next month

HARRISBURG — For its first 2020 attraction, Open Stage of Harrisburg is inviting theatregoers to a magical world.
After the recent conclusion of its annual production of “A Christmas Carol,” OSH will present “Amelie the Musical,” with 7:30 p.m. performances on Feb. 1, 6-8, 10, 13-15, 20-22, 27-29, and March 5-7. The show has 2:00 p.m. matinees offered on Feb. 2, 9, 16, 23, 29, and March 1, 8, with an 11:00 a.m. show on Feb. 22.
Stuart Landon, Open Stage’s producing artistic director, describes the musical adaptation of Broadway’s “Amelie” as a “lovely and romantic character study.”
To help ease her harsh and hurtful life, an innocent and naive girl moves to Paris. She decides to become an anonymous good-deed doer and take on the world with her own sense of justice by improvising covert acts of kindness. On her way, she discovers love, but soon realizes that she’ll have to risk everything and say what is in her heart to find true happiness.
Her world is fantasy-filled, as the imaginative dreamer finds her voice, discovers the power of connection, and sees possibility around every corner. “Amelie” is described as a contemporary fairy tale; a charming and funny experience for both kids and adults, in tough times marked by turmoil and uncertainty.
Not begging for glory or recompense, “Amelie” asks the audience what kindness they can do for the world around them by escaping their comfort zone to truly live life to the fullest by paying that kindness forward.
Landon directs “Amelie the Musical,” which is based upon 2001’s five-time Oscar nominated French film. Nicholas Werner is the show’s music director, with Kelly Strange providing choreography.
Open Stage of Harrisburg issues a content advisory that “Amelie” may not be suitable for very young children.
