‘Sweeney Todd’ hits CTL’s stage this week

Don’t call him Benjamin Barker. His name is “Sweeney Todd” — and his razors are out to wreak revenge!

The Community Theatre League will present this dark musical for a three-weekend run starting tomorrow. Performances are set for 7:30 p.m. Jan. 31, Feb.1, 6-8, 13-15, with 2 p.m. matinees on Feb. 2, 9 and 16 at the downtown theatre, 100 West Third St.

The musical thriller is directed by Seth Sponhouse, CTL’s executive director, who describes “Sweeney Todd” as a “really exciting ride.”

“Something that has always intrigued me as a director and designer is how to tell a story as big as ‘Sweeney Todd’ on our unique stage. I think the cast, crew, and myself have come up with some pretty great solutions on how to make this show work beautifully in our space without missing a beat,” said Sponhouse.

“I was blessed to work alongside Diana Welshans as our music director and David Reed III as our choreographer,” he added. “They both brought a fresh, exciting level of energy to everything that they did.”

Heading the cast are Chris Dailey as the demon barber Sweeney Todd, and Marisa Sorrentino Hickey as Mrs. Lovett.

Dailey (last seen in CTL’s “It’s A Wonderful Life”) noted how the role of Sweeney is very challenging.

“I find his character to be interesting, as I wonder how I would personally react if one person took away from me everything that I cared about,” said Dailey. “Although Sweeney does many vile things, since he is also a victim, I try to make his character somewhat sympathetic to the audience.”

CTL veteran Hickey (seen in last year’s production of another Sondheim musical “Company”) is Sweeney’s willing and sometimes comical cohort Mrs. Lovett, noted for baking “The Worst Pies In London.”

Always enthusiastically encouraging first-time performers, the Community Theatre League welcomes the following, who are making their Mainstage debut: Doug Powers (Judge Turpin), Sam Weaver (Beadle Bamford) Taylor Elliott (Anthony), Alexis Griess (Johanna), Maggie Stroop (Tobias) and Hunter Nolan (Pirelli).

Ensemble members making their CTL Mainstage debuts are Ellen Schaefer, Kira Bierly, Caroline Fish and Sloan Wood.

The show’s setting is 19th Century London’s Fleet Street and environs, where a barber returns, seeking revenge against the lecherous judge who framed Sweeney and ravaged his innocent wife.

Gerry Gold, CTL’s set director, has built a large raised platform where most of the playing action occurs. With three recesses within the platform, a unique feature of this production has the musicians on-stage and positioned in two of the recesses, with Brett Hosterman, the musical conductor, directing the pit’s orchestra from the recessed center area.

With book by Hugh Wheeler, Composer/Lyricist Stephen Sondheim’s lush, semi-operatic score features diverse selections, from comical ditties to powerful ballads (including the lilting “Johanna” and the intense duet “Pretty Women”).

Early reservations are recommended for this Tony Award-winning musical. For more information, call 570-327-1777 or visit ctlshows.com.
