Local roundup: South boys defeat NP-Liberty 62-55

South Williamsport picked up a 62-55 season-opening win in boys basketball against North Penn-Liberty on Tuesday night.

South’s Levi Butler and Radley Knapp combined for 30 points to lift South Williamsport. Butler scored 18 points. Jordan Baier added 10 points.

Liberty had a trio of double-digit scorers as well in Luke Kreger (15), Louis Mercantino (14) and Adynn Wheeland (11).

Jersey Shore allowed just three first-half points, building a 27-point halftime lead and cruised to a 47-15 season opening win at CMVT.

Ben Dalton scored a game-high 11 points and added four steals, while Roman Dittmar and Khani McCray each had eight points. Carson Watkins made four steals and Landon Lathan dealt three assists.

Kyreek Bradshaw scored 22 points and Williamsport fought back from a 12-point first quarter deficit but could not catch Carlisle in a 57-50 season opening loss on the road.

The Millionaires were limited to four first quarter points before scoring 20 in the second. They closed the game on an 18-13 run. Bradshaw scored nine points in the fourth quarter and Micah Washington finished with nine points. Quincy Williams added eight points.

• A 23-point, 19-rebound double-double by Kameron Lightner helped North Penn-Mansfield defeat Muncy in girls basketball, 43-39. In the fourth quarter alone, Lightner scored 14 points. She also had three steals.

Maddie McNamara scored 10 points, had seven rebounds and dished out four assists.

Canton defeated Cowanesque Valley, 35-28. Kendall Kitchen led the charge for the Warriors with an 11-point performance. Cowanesque Valley’s Starr Ordway was the team’s lone double-digit scorer as she had 12 points.

Addison Eyer led Muncy with 14 points while Rosie Zalonis scored 10. Ava Eyer added eight points.

• Brandt Harer started the 2024-25 season in dominant fashion, pinning Wyalusing’s Matthew Johnson to help Montgomery defeat the Rams, 49-18, in boys wrestling. Harer is the No. 1 ranked wrestler in the state at 139 pounds.

Montgomery’s Manny Stoltzfus pinned Shane Kebilitsch in 61 seconds at 107.

Montgomery’s Coy Bryson earned a 21-5, 4:30 tech fall at 189 over Ethan Vanderpool and Layne Gingery of Montgomery pinned Brenden Wells in 69 seconds at 285.

• Mansfield’s women’s basketball team beat Roberts Wesleyan, 66-45, in a non-conference contest. Katie Sheeler recorded her sixth 20 point game of the season scoring 21 points on 8 of 15 shooting. Paris Anthony added 16 points including knocking down three of her four three point attempts.

Cydney Stanton scored 9 points and pulled in a game high 13 rebounds.

Sheeler jump started the Mountaineer offense scoring eight of the teams first ten points, helping the Mounties to a 12-11 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Mansfield allowed just eight points in the second quarter but couldn’t stretch their lead any further as they led 20-19 at the half.
