Social media helps police identify alleged thief caught on video

Social media played an integral role in leading Montoursville police to Maurice Gilmore in a theft investigation that began when an employee at the Weis Market on North Loyalsock Avenue reported that $21 was stolen from his money pouch which he had accidentally left in a shopping cart at the store on the morning of Nov. 24, according to an affidavit. The theft was captured on the supermarket’s surveillance system, and after police posted an image from the video on their social media page, they received numerous tips that the man shown in the video was allegedly Gilmore, 55, of 1108 Market St., it was stated in an affidavit. The image matched Gilmore’s driver’s license photo as well as his picture on his social media pager, police said. Charged with one count of misdemeanor theft, Gilmore has waived his preliminary hearing before District Judge Gary Whiteman and is free on $5,000 bail.
