Local roundup: Canton girls advance to first district semifinal since 2002

Canton made history on Tuesday in girls basketball. The Warriors defeated Southern Columbia, 48-45, to reach the District 4 Class AA semifinals for the first time since 2002.

Canton (16-8) also has the most wins in a season since 2000.

Canton advances to face Northeast Bradford.

Canton had two players in double figures led by Kendall Kitchens’ 23 points and Lydia Roupp’s 11. Cailyn VanNoy scored nine.

A 29-point first quarter proved too much for Williamsport to claw back from as the Millionaires fell to State College, 84-27, in a District 4-6 Class 6A play-in game.

State College led 29-4 after the first quarter and held Williamsport to four points in the first, third and fourth quarters.

Nadirah Tutler led the Millionaires with 11 points and Jaelynn Helmrich added six.

• Sullivan County earned a first-round win in the District 4 Class A playoffs with a 57-47 victory over Galeton at home.

The Griffins (13-10) had three players in double digits scoring. Colin King scored 15 points, Lucas King scored 11 and Tucker Blasi added 10. Justin Hemighaus added eight points for the Griffins.

Blasi also had five rebounds, five assists and four steals. Ryan Murray had six rebounds, as did Hemighaus. Lucas King had a team-high five steals.

North Penn-Liberty defeated Millville, 67-31, in a first-round District 4 Class A playoff game. Liberty’s offense was playing great as four players reached double figures.

Luke Kreger led the Mounties with 21 points while Adynn Wheeland scored 11. Both Brody Grinnell and Blake Oakley scored 10 points apiece.

Kreger had a team-high seven steals, Oakley led Liberty with five assists and also grabbed six rebounds.

Liberty advances to face Bucktail in the semifinals. The Bucks defeated Northumberland Christian at home, 60-54.

• After hitting the first home run in the Landmark Conference in 2025, junior third baseman Brody Lindsey has earned the Landmark Conference’s first Athlete of the Week award of the season.

After going hitless in the first game of the year, Lindsey was 4-for-8 with four runs, a double, a homer and three RBI in the last two games against Greensboro. He had a double and two RBI in the second game of the series and followed that with his first NCAA homer and three runs in the final game on Sunday.

Lindsey is second on the team with a .364 (4-of-11) batting average and he leads the team with four runs, three RBI, a .727 slugging percentage and 1.189 OPS.

He is Lycoming’s first Landmark Athlete of the Week since senior Danny DeLucas earned the award on March 4, 2024.

The Warriors are back on the field on Saturday, Feb. 22, when they head to the University of Maryland’s Smith Stadium for a 2 p.m. doubleheader with Marymount Universtity (Va.).

• The Lock Haven women’s swimming team competes at the 2024-25 PSAC swimming and diving championships at the Graham Aquatic Center in York, Pa. by competing in day two of four.

Holly Cleworth competed for the second day in a row, this time in the 200 free finishing 29th with a time of 1:58.92. In the 100 fly, Emma Pequignot competed in her first singles competition of the week where she swam to a time of 1:03.21.

The squad of Sydney Houck, Alaina Cane, Makenzie Eades, and Marisa Gachette finished with a time of 1:43.67 in the 200 free relay improving their seeded time by 1.09.

Cleworth, Houck, and Cane teamed up with Nora Craig in the 400 medley relay finishing with a time of 4:09.65.

• Make it four straight Patriot League Player of the Week awards for the Bucknell men’s tennis team. Amar Tahirovic earned his second honor of the spring, bookending a pair of citations for teammate Adam Stavrakas.

Tahirovic was a 6-3, 6-2 winner over Alexander de Sousa at No. 1 singles, and he teamed with Brendan McDonald for a 7-5 win over de Sousa and Roman Lafond at first doubles. Stavrakas also won his singles match 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2, but the Dragons went on to win the dual by a 5-2 count.

Tahirovic is now 16-2 in singles this season, including a 5-0 record in dual matches, and 11-6 in doubles.
