Union: No-confidence vote for president set for mid-February

Faculty members and coaches at Bloomsburg, Lock Haven and Mansfield campuses of Commonwealth University are expected to take a no-confidence vote on its president, Bashar Hanna, on Tuesday, Feb. 11, and Wednesday, Feb. 12.

According to a release from the Association of Pennsylvania State College and University Faculties (APSCUF), the vote will be taken electronically and via anonymous ballot at this time.

Previously, the Lock Haven chapter of APSCUF’s executive council voted in late November to send the vote to chapter members.

Each chapter determined late last year they would send the vote to chapter members.

Results of the vote will be announced later that week and will not be broken down by bargaining unit or chapter, according to the release.

The move comes after Hanna and Commonwealth University-Bloomsburg, along with the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education and former Provost James Krause, were found liable on 11 counts in a wrongful termination lawsuit dating back to 2018.

In August 2024, it took a jury just over six hours to decide Bloomsburg University and PASSHE had wrongfully targeted and fired a business school dean in 2018 after he helped a secretary report allegations of improper conduct by BU’s president, according to The Press Enterprise.

The scheduled vote follows months of APSCUF efforts to convince authority “to do what is in the best interest of the university and its students,” the release stated.

All three chapters in December announced plans to hold votes of no-confidence.

APSCUF President Dr. Kenneth M. Mash in November issued a statement calling for Hanna’s presidency to end.

“We don’t want to take such public, drastic measures, but we must,” Mash said, “because, understand that everyone’s first concern should be our students — and the university president, the council of trustees and the State System Board of Governors should also put the students, their well-being and their success first.”

APSCUF represents about 5,000 faculty and coaches at the State System campuses: Bloomsburg, California, Cheyney, Clarion, East Stroudsburg, Edinboro, Indiana, Kutztown, Lock Haven, Mansfield, Millersville, Shippensburg, Slippery Rock and West Chester.

Starting at $2.99/week.
